10 Pip Cross Tips and Tricks to Solve Puzzles Faster

Once you understand the basic rules of Pip Cross, the difference between a slow solve and a fast one comes down to pattern recognition. Here are ten tips that consistently shave time off a board, from beginner habits to techniques used on Hard and Super difficulty.

1. Always scan before you tap

Resist the urge to start selecting dice immediately. Spend five seconds reading every target on the board. The lowest numbers are your anchors — they have the fewest possible dice combinations that can satisfy them.

2. Hunt for forced singles

If a row or column target equals the pip value of exactly one die in that line, that die must be selected. There is no other way to reach the target. Forced singles are the fastest points on the board.

3. Work the intersections, not the middle of a line

A die that belongs to both a row and a column gives you two pieces of information from one tap. Prioritize testing intersection dice over dice that only affect a single row or column.

4. Use elimination on high targets too

Players often only look for small targets, but a target close to the maximum possible sum of a line is just as constraining — it usually means almost every die in that line must be selected, with only one or two left out.

5. Track running totals, not just the final target

Super Pips shows your live row and column sums as you select. Use that number actively: if a row target is 15 and your current selection already totals 14, you know the next die you add must be worth exactly 1, or you are overshooting.

6. Solve the most constrained line last

Counter-intuitively, leave the row or column with the most flexible target for the end. By the time every other line is solved, the intersections will have already fixed most of its dice for you.

7. Don't fight symmetry — use it

On Hard and Super boards, targets are often mirrored or close in value across the grid. If two rows have similar targets and share a column, compare them directly instead of solving each in isolation.

8. Deselect fearlessly

New players sometimes treat a selected die as "locked in." It isn't. If a later constraint proves a die can't belong to the solution, deselect it immediately rather than trying to compensate elsewhere.

9. Practice on Easy before chasing Super times

Speed on higher difficulties comes from having the small-sum patterns (which pairs of dice make 4, 7, 9, and so on) memorized. Easy boards build that muscle memory with less visual noise.
